Vasili Blokhin

This guy is one of the most prolific slaughterer in the history of mankind: Vasili Blokhin was the chief executioner in Russia during the time of Stalin, and he is said to have personally executed tens of thousands of people. At the massacre of Katyn in 1940, it is said that he shot 7000 Polish prisoners of war in 28 nightly sessions, boasting an average kill-ratio of one murder per three minutes. After the reign of Stalin he purportedly sank into alcoholism and madness and killed himself in 1955.

No Russian

No surprise this is controversial: the level "No Russian" from the video game Modern Warfare 2 has gained notoriety for its warped game play. As an undercover CIA agent embedded with Russian terrorists, the level takes you through an assault on Moscow airport, killing heaps of civilians and even awarding achievements for certain combos.

The "Machinima" version above is a re-telling of the mission in movie format, using a cinematic camera to follow the NPC action. No matter if you like the content, this is pretty well-done.

Bechyovinka

The abandoned town of Bechyovinka, formerly a secret submarine base, is on the island of Kamchatka and is also called Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskya located a few kilometers down the bay from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskya.

You can look it up on Google Maps and you'll see that there's only a blurred out satellite view available, showing that it's very much at the end of the world, on the tip of the peninsula... indeed a perfect spot for a secret base.

Chernobyl footage by Vladimir Shevchenko

Ukrainian filmmaker Vladimir Shevchenko was one of the first cameramen inside the "red zone" of maximum contamination when the nuclear disaster of Chernobyl happened in 1986. The footage shows him atop of the roof of the nuclear reactor without a protective suit. It also includes a sequence of one of the helicopters that were dumping boric acid into the reactor hitting a crane and crashing.

Abandoned missile base

I'm a big sucker for abandoned facilities, even more so when it comes to military installations. Here's some new photos from such from the English Russia blog.. I'm mostly intrigued by those missile charts shown here.

Russian nuclear plant

Some rare photographs by Russian blogger and photographer Ilya Varlamov from inside of Russia's "most modern" nuclear power plant, built between 1982 and 1990 near Smolensk. Nice repetitive patterns here.

The door to hell

Amazing photographs from a gas fire in Uzbekistan. Apparently they put fire to the gas when the drilling site collapsed and it's been burning for 35 years.

Laptop, Russian style

Encumbered by the financial crisis, a cunning Russian not able to afford a regular computer notebook built a "mobile" PC, by fitting all components of a regular desktop PC into a wooden suitcase. This is what you could call a "case mod", huh.
